One place we had passed many times but never visited was Threlkeld Mining Museum so we decided to pass the afternoon there.
This was a good decision as the museum is packed with information about the mining in the area and loads of geological samples and it would be easy to spend a lot of time in there.
As well as the museum there are mine tours, a short train ride, and the opportunity to pan in the local stream. Our train ride was diesel powered but they do run steam during the summer months.
There is also a huge collection of heavy equipment such as dozers and cranes which would take some time to see them all.
Friendly and well informed staff were on hand to answer any questions we had.
