Numbum's Shakedown Run

After a long winter of seemingly never ending problems, Numbum is finally back on the road.

Towards the end of last season the old girl was retired with a broken crankshaft and over the winter was treated to a new steel billet crank. My credit card is still recovering.

While it was laid up I checked a few things over and ended up replacing a rear wheel bearing, and fitting relined brake shoes all round.

As the charging system has been hit & miss for some time now I decided to go modern and fit an alternator. Dead easy, I thought, just two wires. It wasn't and it took a lot of messing about to get it right, but it's sorted now.

Today we took a 30 mile shakedown run with a coffee stop on the way. I found out that the horn has stopped working. Just another job to do, but apart from that the car ran well.

Durham Dales Classic Trial

This great event is now run by the Middle England Classic Vehicle Club and it's still a superb trial. We marshalled on two sections. The first one, Home/Stead Farm was the first section of the day and getting there on time meant getting up before the sparrows.

The B GT made easy work of the drive up the A68 and we arrived in plenty of time to set up the section. At this stage it was a pleasant sunny day.

This look to be quite an easy section, straight up a grassy hill with a restart about halfway up. It wasn't what it looked. Few cleared it and quite a few didn't even make it to the restart section.

Once everybody had been through we took the opportunity to have a cuppa and a bite to eat before heading off to set up our next section, Beaumont. This is a winding section on rough loose shale with a restart towards the end. Most managed to clear the section with apparent ease.

The previous bright sunshine vanished during the afternoon and we could see the rain sweeping across the valley. By the time we closed the section we were cold and more than a tad damp.

We finally closed the section and picked up all the markers and warmed up a bit on the drive back to the finish to hand in our results and the equipment before setting off for home.

It was a good day despite the weather. All the competitors seemed to enjoy it and that's what it's all about.

Austin Healey Club Northumbria Classic Cars in Action

We took the B GT up the A68 to Otterburn to join these great guys on a 120 mile round trip from Otterburn to Tibbie Shiels and back

We arrived to see a lovely sight of big Healeys, TR6s, an MGC and another B GT. I don't know about the other GT driver but I felt slightly inadequate as I was lacking in the cylinder department by two.

It was bright sunshine and pleasantly warm when we set off just after ten for a drive along some superb roads, arriving at Tibbie Sheils just after noon.

We stopped on the way to take some video and Pam got some shots of our fellow travellers as they passed by.

Some elected to go to a nearby pub for lunch whilst others, us included, settled down to eat on the shores of St Mary's Loch.

The return journey was largely uneventful with some confusion in Selkirk resulting in cars appearing from all directions but Pam soon had us sorted out and on our way again.

Seeing a sign for Ettrick Valley brough back great memories of last years run with MGCC Caledonian Centre when we drove the TA up Wichie Know and across the beautiful Ettrick Valley.

We arrived back at Otterburn Mill to have a natter and a cuppa before setting off for the 90 minute drive home.

All in all a lovely day and a big thank you for inviting us. We had a blast.
