This was not an official checkpoint, just an optional stop so we weren't sure how many cars we would see. Twelve were expected but we only saw seven.

It's amazing what you see in the dimly lit corners of a motorway service area. I met up with a few friends to see some of the cars on the Historic Monte Carlo Rally. The cars we were to see set off from Glasgow. Others set off from Barcelona, Oslo, Reims, Turin & Varsovie. This was not an official checkpoint, just an optional stop so we weren't sure how many cars we would see. Twelve were expected but we only saw seven.

Last week I managed to borrow some lift time and did a pre MOT check on Bruise, the 71 GT. I found quite a bit needed doing, front pads & rear shoes replaced, one rear wheel cylinder replaced, steering rack boot replaced, a rear suspension bush replaced and a bit of welding done. Well worth the effort though as it sailed through the test with no advisories. The day started badly for us heading, in the 71 GT, for Birk Brow to meet other menbers of the Tees Vally MG Owners Club for the annual Fish & Chip run to Whitby. We were a bit later away than we wanted to be and the traffic was worse than expected with the result that we arrived at Birk Brow seven minutes late to find everybody had been waiting for us in the freezing wind. Thanks guys and gals, we appreciate it!! Not only were we late but the minicam decided it didn't want to work so we had to use the backup. This is new to us and we didn't have a mount worked out but we managed to fix it to the dashboard. It shows the date & time and there's no way to get rid of it, which is what you get when you buy a cheap Chinese knock off. Apart from that it's a pretty good bit of kit for eight quid. As soon as we arrived at Birk Brow all the frozen souls jumped into their cars to set off for Whitby so we didn't even get out of ours. Because we didn't have a designated parking place, it was grab a spot when you could and the group ended up split into mini groups. Our little group found a great chippy and tucked in to fish, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter, and tea & coffee at reasonable prices. Suitably refreshed, we went for a wander around this lovely town. As the sun sank in the sky, the already chilly temperatures started to drop, so we decided to head for home. Thankfully the GT has a decent heater so it didn't take long for us to warm up. Another good day out. I have noticed that this page tends to load slowly for me. Maybe it's my computer but it could be that the video and slideshows are slowing things down a bit. To try to improve things I'm creating archives of previous years so only the current year is on this page. Links to the archives are above and also on the bottom of the left hand navigation panel. The first run of the New Year saw a small group of car enthusiasts with varied tastes meet in Bedale High Street for a 30 mile run to The Buck Inn at Thornton Watlass for lunch. This is what this old car hobby is all about, meeting great people, seeing lovely cars, and having fun.

AuthorHi, I'm Owen and I've been having fun with MGs since 1970, starting with my 1937 MGTA. Since then I've had three Y types and a couple of Z Magnettes. I now have a 1971 MGB GT along with the TA and my wife and I are still having fun Archives
