As part of the planning for this I need to know how far I'm going to have to travel so with an atlas and mileage calculator, I've made a start.

For a while now I've had the idea in my mind to take the TA and drive round the coast of mainland Britain using roads as close to the coast as possible. Recently there was a competition which will give funding to the winner. I've entered and my entry has been accepted. There is a long way to go as entries have to be selected to go to a public vote. If I get that far I'll be begging for your votes. I'll update as I get more news. As part of the planning for this I need to know how far I'm going to have to travel so with an atlas and mileage calculator, I've made a start. Even if I don't win, I may attempt this anyway when funds allow.

3pm saw us loading up the ZS with all the gear needed for a cold night marshalling on this annual rally. This year the start was at Thirsk Auction Mart about half an hours drive from us. The original plan was for us to be gate marshals on a gated road but it turned out that there wouldn't be any stock in the fields and the gates could be left open so we were diverted to car park duties. This turned out to be a total waste of resources as at one point there were eight of us doing a job that could have been done by one or two at the most. We did what we had to do and then retired to the warmth of the cafe to wait to see the start. While we were sipping coffee & eating chips we found that there was a shortage of marshals out in the wilds and some groups were having to chase around to marshal at more than one checkpoint while there was now six of us sitting around doing nothing. It's getting harder to find people who are prepared to go out in poor conditions to enable others to have their fun and it's just plain stupid to not use those who are prepared to do it. We will be thinking hard about doing it in the future. Despite our frustration it wasn't a bad night. We met some great people and saw some super cars being used as they were intended. With not a lot to do on car park duties I managed to get a few pictures of the cars in the car park and the scrutineering area. We watched the start and I managed to get a few half decent shots. I'm impressed with the new camera. So that was the afternoon and evening. We were back home just after 10pm, far earlier than we expected to be.
After scaping the ice off the BGT we set off for the 15 minute drive to Middlesbrough Motor Club where a welcome cup of cofee awaited us. It was a delightful run on some lovely roads, only marred for us by the low winter sun and a dirty windscreen. The electric washer pump picked a bad time to fail and the push button one was as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Once back at the clubhouse we had more coffee and pigs in blankets in a bun. Some great chat rounded off a good day. Thanks to all who made it possible.
A happy New Year to you all. Today we took a 100 mile round trip to meet up with friends from the VSCC who took a short drive followed by lunch at the Squinting Cat in Harrogate. The MG ZS was the chariot of choice as we had our grandchildren with us and needed the four seats. It was an uneventful trip down and we had a great time looking at the cars, chatting to the owners and filling our faces with good grub. The weather was kinder this year but it seemed like fewer cars were out. Lovely cars, great company and good food. It doesn't get any better.

AuthorHi, I'm Owen and I've been having fun with MGs since 1970, starting with my 1937 MGTA. Since then I've had three Y types and a couple of Z Magnettes. I now have a 1971 MGB GT along with the TA and my wife and I are still having fun Archives
